03 — Why These Awards Exist

Animal Welfare & Excellence Awards

The Animal Welfare & Excellence Awards were created with the purpose of recognizing professionals, institutions, organizations, and companies that represent a model of excellence based not only on technical and professional achievement, but also on a genuine commitment to animal welfare as a central pillar of their philosophy and daily activity.

At the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence, we believe that the true progress of the animal sector should not be measured exclusively through economic growth, business expansion, commercial success, or operational volume. Instead, it should also be evaluated through the ability to develop professional models where the physical, emotional, behavioral, and environmental welfare of animals occupies a central and non-negotiable role within daily decision-making processes.

Modern society frequently tends to associate success with purely financial or commercial indicators. However, there are countless professionals who carry out their daily work with a profound ethical commitment toward animals, implementing advanced welfare standards, respectful handling systems, stress-reduction protocols, individualized care, and emotionally responsible management practices even when doing so requires higher levels of effort, investment, time, and operational complexity.

Through these awards, the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence seeks to highlight and recognize those individuals, institutions, and projects that actively contribute to building a more ethical, advanced, humane, and welfare-oriented future within veterinary medicine, responsible breeding, animal behavior and education, animal protection, exotic animal care, and all professional sectors related to the wellbeing of animals.

The Animal Welfare & Excellence Awards recognize not only technical expertise and professional achievement, but also the humanity, ethical sensitivity, and genuine commitment of those who understand that animal welfare must always prevail over exclusively economic or commercial interests.

Each category is independently evaluated by the scientific and ethical committees linked to the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence. The evaluation process considers factors related to animal welfare, clinical quality, innovation, respectful handling, ethical protocols, environmental adaptation, continuing education, emotional wellbeing, positive industry impact, and genuine commitment to improving the quality of life of animals.

04 — Governance & Process

Evaluation Criteria & Selection Process

The Animal Welfare & Excellence Awards are independently evaluated by the scientific and ethical committees associated with the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence, ensuring an assessment process based on objective criteria, professional excellence, ethical standards, and animal welfare principles within each award category.

The objective of these recognitions is not merely to reward technical expertise, business success, or commercial performance, but to identify those professionals, institutions, and projects that represent a particularly advanced and genuine commitment to the physical, emotional, and environmental welfare of animals within their daily professional activity.

For this reason, the evaluation process incorporates not only criteria related to clinical quality, innovation, infrastructure, or professional development, but also elements linked to ethics, emotional welfare, respectful handling, environmental adaptation, stress reduction, and the overall quality of life of the animals involved.

Candidate selection may occur through two primary channels. On one hand, the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence will actively conduct observation, research, and sector monitoring in order to identify professionals, institutions, and projects whose work demonstrates exceptional relevance from an ethical, scientific, or welfare-oriented perspective.

At the same time, direct nominations may also be submitted by clients, collaborators, pet owners, industry professionals, institutions, or any individual who believes that a professional, organization, or center demonstrates sufficient merit to be considered for one of the awards granted by our institution.

The nomination process will be carried out through the official form available on our website, where applicants must clearly provide identifying information regarding the nominated professional, institution, or center, together with its location, professional activity, and the specific reasons justifying the nomination and the elements considered particularly relevant for the evaluation process.

Once the nomination period has concluded, the scientific committee will conduct an initial phase of technical review and evaluation in order to verify the suitability of each nomination according to the objective criteria established for the corresponding category. During this phase, aspects such as welfare protocols, clinical standards, innovation, environmental management, behavioral stability, infrastructure quality, professional training, ethical commitment, and positive impact within the sector may be assessed.

Following this preliminary analysis, the nominations considered suitable will proceed to a final evaluation stage conducted by the ethical committee, which will be responsible for the definitive deliberation and final selection of nominees and winners in each category. As a general rule, the organization will establish a final shortlist composed of three candidates per category, from which the final winner will subsequently be selected.

Final decisions will be individually communicated to the selected professionals, institutions, or centers before the official awards ceremony takes place. However, the definitive public announcement of the winners will not be officially disclosed until the institutional gala event and the subsequent national and international communication process.

The scientific committee and ethical committee of the European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence shall consist of a minimum of five specialized members representing different professional sectors related to animal welfare and the animal industry. Mandatory representation shall include veterinary professionals, responsible breeding specialists, animal behavior and education experts, representatives linked to animal rescue and protection, and professionals associated with the development of animal-related products, services, or welfare technologies.

Our organization may progressively expand the number of committee members according to institutional growth and the technical requirements associated with new award categories or professional specializations. However, the minimum number of committee members may never fall below the initially established standards.

Decisions related to certifications, accreditations, and awards shall require a qualified majority of at least three quarters of the participating members involved in each deliberation process, while always promoting, whenever possible, unanimous and consensus-based decision-making between both the scientific and ethical committees.

The European Council for Animal Welfare & Excellence considers transparency, technical rigor, ethical independence, and professional integrity to be essential pillars for ensuring the credibility, legitimacy, and international prestige of its recognitions and evaluation systems. For this reason, all procedures developed by our organization are designed to preserve the highest standards of objectivity, professionalism, ethical responsibility, and commitment to animal welfare.

Honouring a model of excellence in which animal welfare is the central pillar of a profession’s philosophy and daily practice.
