Stress Reduction During Hospital Admission

Stress Reduction During Hospital Admission

Hospital admission is often one of the most emotionally challenging moments for many animals due to separation from their owners, unfamiliar smells, excessive environmental stimulation, and loss of routine. This protocol recommends minimizing waiting times whenever possible, allowing a gradual introduction to the hospitalization area, and avoiding unnecessary handling during the first moments of adaptation. Whenever appropriate, familiar items such as blankets or toys carrying the animal’s scent should be maintained to provide emotional reassurance. The protocol also encourages reducing voice volume in admission areas, minimizing direct visual exposure to reactive patients, and adapting handling techniques according to the temperament and emotional sensitivity of each individual patient. Simple measures such as calm reception procedures, non-slip flooring, and smoother environmental transitions can significantly reduce stress levels and support a more stable emotional and physiological adaptation to hospitalization.
