Amphibian Welfare Protocols

Amphibian Welfare Protocols

Amphibians are extremely sensitive to environmental alterations, water quality, humidity, temperature, and physiological stress caused by inappropriate handling or incorrect husbandry parameters. This protocol recommends minimizing physical manipulation and maintaining highly stable, species-specific environmental conditions.

Key recommendations include carefully controlling humidity, temperature, water quality, substrate safety, ventilation, and exposure to potential chemical irritants. Inappropriate lighting, excessive heat, poor water conditions, and excessive vibration or movement around enclosures should be avoided whenever possible.

The protocol also emphasizes that amphibians may show subtle signs of welfare deterioration, and that environmental instability can quickly compromise immune, metabolic, and skin health. The objective is to promote more physiological and stable conditions compatible with the immune and metabolic balance of these highly sensitive species.
