In-Store Animal Handling Standards

In-Store Animal Handling Standards

Daily handling of animals within pet stores and commercial centers must always prioritize physical and emotional welfare over purely commercial criteria. This protocol promotes calm, respectful, and species-appropriate handling adapted to the individual needs and developmental stage of each animal.

Key recommendations include avoiding constant unnecessary manipulation, reducing abrupt environmental changes, and minimizing stress caused by excessive human interaction. Direct contact with multiple people throughout the day should be limited, particularly in young or highly sensitive animals.

Staff should also be trained to recognize signs of stress, fear, or emotional overload and to adapt handling according to the animal’s condition at each moment. The objective is to ensure that daily life inside the facility remains as stable and welfare-compatible as possible.
